Central argument: The arrival of the cable Television in the villages of India has helped women improve their position in society.
The authors recognized three problems with the position of women in society;” whether women get to make her own decisions, attitude towards getting beaten up and which gender baby they prefer having. Living and studying in India I know that these are great problems with the urban society of India. I would completely agree that Cable T.V has helped the thought and the way women are thought of.
There is this very famous T.V show called ‘balika vadhu’ it’s based on a rich family which lives in a village. In this television show it shows us how the man works and the women cooks. The man beats the women if wrong. Basically whatever a man does is correct and a women wrong. As this show progresses the women in the show start to retaliate and push against all the oppression which the opposite sex has given them. I could only imagine that the women in the rural area would feel some sort of frustration and agitation towards this and recognize that they should have more rights. According to the statistics provided in the article it seems the females did.
“The authors followed women 2,700 households in villages”, they followed them from 2001 to 2003 and as an Indian i know that’s around the time cable T.V came to these places. A survey was done in these few villages of india before cable T.V and after it. After T.V cable 10 percent of the women who said a husband beating the wife is okay fell. The number of girls who attend school increased by eight percent in the houses with cables. The women who use to prefer sons over daughters also fell by 2o percent in villages with cable compared to the 12 percent without cable. So overall these T.V shows are helping the position of women in society.
Sure there are other major factors such as education involved but T.V can be looked upon as a form of indirect education. T.V shows such as “Balika vadhu” are about women in the olden days compared to the more educated women. These TV shows also prove how women can do the same work as men if females are given the same chances as males. Clearly the authors followed the main issues of women, in Indian society and pointed out how cable as helped the women at least have a better attitude towards themselves. This happened in the Renaissance as well, not with women but with humans. Instead of T.V it was great writing. Changing the great medieval views that humans are bad to the renaissance view of humans have the potential of being perfect. If someone else has hope in you and believes that you should do better, generally you would try and want to do better for yourself too. That’s why student listen more to teachers who say “it’s your future not, mine.” Just like that most T.V shows are telling women in rural areas your deserve more.
